Understanding ‘Intention’

‘Intention’ is a folk psychological concept that is a key element in most legal doctrines, most influentially in determining criminal culpability. However, a materialist and empirical interrogation of this concept has provided interesting and counter-intuitive insights.

David Eagleman writing in Perspectives magazine provides a good overview of the scientific understanding of ‘intention’ including the Libet experiment and the difficulty in finding ‘voluntary action’ in the brain.
